Buyer's guide

What designer fragrances should I sell on eBay UK?

Our recent eBay sales show which lines, formats and sizes move most readily for us. Use that order as a starting point for a small, accurate range, not as a promise of demand.

What sells on eBay, and what tends to sit?

On our eBay sales over the last three months, Calvin Klein Obsession for Men Eau de Toilette 125ml is our best-selling line; our order of sales cannot tell you which fragrances will sit for every seller. Demand varies with the accuracy of the listing, the seller’s reputation, availability and the audience a retailer has built.

The lines below are examples from our own recent eBay order, best first. They are warehouse experience rather than a general rule for every eBay account.

  • Calvin Klein Obsession for Men Eau de Toilette 125ml
  • Calvin Klein Eternity Moment for Women Eau de Parfum 100ml
  • Hugo Boss Bottled Stick for Men Deodorant 75ml
  • Coty Exclamation Eau de Cologne 50ml
  • Estée Lauder Sensuous Eau de Parfum 50ml
  • Calvin Klein Obsession for Women Eau de Parfum 100ml
  • Paloma Picasso 30ml Eau de Parfum Spray

A recognisable fragrance name alone is not enough reason to buy deeply. Start by choosing a tight group of lines that match the formats and sizes that sell better for us, then watch your own sales and returns. Sterling Trading Group has no minimum order, which makes it practical to test a small selection before extending it.

Do not assume that a strong-selling individual line makes every product from that house equally suitable. A 125ml Eau de Toilette is our best-selling line, while smaller sizes perform better overall in our own size order. Use both pieces of information together when deciding what to stock.

How should a fragrance listing be written?

Write a factual, searchable listing that tells the buyer exactly which fragrance, concentration, size and product type they will receive. The title and item specifics should match the retail packaging precisely, including whether the product is an Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, deodorant, deodorant spray, aftershave or Eau de Cologne.

A useful title structure is the brand name, fragrance name, product type and size. Keep the same wording across the title, photographs, description and item specifics. A buyer should not have to work out whether a listing is for a spray, stick, aftershave or a different concentration.

Include the details a buyer needs to check before ordering:

  • The exact fragrance name as shown on the packaging
  • The fragrance strength or product format
  • The stated size in ml
  • Whether the item is sealed or the condition of the retail packaging
  • Clear photographs that match the item being sold
  • Any relevant batch-code information where visible on the unit

Sterling Trading Group sells genuine brand products in retail packaging, batch-coded, bought from UK distributors. However, Sterling Trading Group is not an authorised distributor of any brand. Do not describe yourself, Sterling Trading Group or the product supply route as authorised unless you have separate authority to make that statement.

Avoid unsupported wording such as claims about performance, rarity, age or manufacturer endorsement. If a detail cannot be confirmed from the product, its packaging or your own stock records, leave it out. Accurate listings reduce buyer confusion and make it easier to manage questions, returns and stock records.

Which sizes and strengths should a new seller start with?

A new seller should begin with Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum, concentrating first on 50ml, 100ml and 30ml sizes. That is the order in which those strengths and sizes sell for us, based on our own recent sales experience.

Our strength order is Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, Deodorant, Deodorant Spray, Aftershave and Eau de Cologne. This suggests starting with fragrance sprays before adding more product types, then using deodorants and aftershaves to broaden a range once the core listings are working.

Our size order is 50ml, 100ml, 30ml, 75ml, 200ml and 125ml. The leading position of 50ml does not mean larger sizes should be ignored: our best-selling individual line is a 125ml Eau de Toilette. It means that, across our own sales, 50ml sells better than the other sizes listed.

Women’s lines sell better for us than men’s lines, and men’s lines sell better than unisex lines. A balanced first selection can therefore lean towards women’s fragrance while retaining familiar men’s products and a limited unisex choice. This is our sales order, not a prediction that the same split will apply to every shop or online account.

What goes wrong for a new fragrance seller on eBay?

The main avoidable problems are inaccurate product details, unsupported claims, poor stock control and buying too broadly before a seller knows what works for their own account. These are practical trading risks rather than conclusions drawn from our eBay sales order.

Fragrance listings can look similar while being materially different. A buyer expecting an Eau de Parfum may not accept an Eau de Toilette as an alternative, and a deodorant stick is not the same product as a deodorant spray. Check the concentration, format and size against the actual unit before listing it.

Packaging also needs careful handling. Buyers should receive the condition described, whether that is sealed retail packaging or packaging with a stated imperfection. Use photographs and wording that reflect the item you hold, rather than a generic image that may show a different size, format or presentation.

Keep purchasing records and match stock carefully to live listings. Genuine product, retail packaging and batch codes are useful facts, but they do not replace accurate descriptions, sensible dispatch handling or clear communication with buyers. Avoid implying that a product is authorised, exclusive or supplied directly by a brand when that cannot be supported.

Finally, check eBay UK’s current requirements for the category, delivery, returns and seller obligations before listing. Rules and account requirements can change, while a careful product record remains useful for every item sold.
